Caption: "What, to the American slave, is your fourth of July? I answer: A day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless." - Frederick Douglass. "Where's my beer?" John Q. Public.

Caption: Of course they gon' kill net neutrality, Big L. So what we won't be able to visit any site we want to online anymore. Nothin' good last forever, bruh. It's like that old Doctor Zeus book said … Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. I don't think Doctor Seuss meant we should apply that to our freedom. Freedom just an illusion, bruh, like parking tickets.

Caption: What were you thinking about when you went to bed on 9/11? I was praying to wake up the next day and it'd all just be a dream. What were you thinking about when you went to be on 9/11? I was hoping we'd rise to the occasion and honor the dead, the survivors, and the heroes ... by failing to rebuild the Twin Towers, by curtailing our own civil liberties, by calling each other "un-American," by torturing prisoners, mocking the French, invading the wrong country, and having our airports inspect kids' and old people's underpants. I like to have realistic hopes. I don't think sarcasm's allowed on 9/11 day.

Caption: 2011. Civil libertarians are upset at how often President Obama has asserted the "state secrets privilege." Some things should be secret, but still it goes to show how this president is way too secretive. That's proof he's subverting our democracy. You're just being paranoid. 2008. Civil libertarians are upset at how often President Bush has asserted the "state secret's privilege." Some things should be secret, but still it goes to show how this president is way too secretive. That's proof he's subverting our democracy. You're just paranoid.

Caption: Even if they're only in our minds … GHOSTS exist. For instance … we cling to democracy because the ghosts of the Founding Fathers live in our minds. They sit on our couch in their powdered wigs, tights and puffy pants, whispering to us about freedom and liberty ... ... and their right to own slaves. Some ghosts have bipolar disorder.

Caption: VH1 presents Where are They Now? The Some People Story. It was the mid-2000's. Politicians across the country relied on him. There wasn't a press conference around that didn't broadcast his beaming smile. I sound wise compared to him. And for one brief fearmongering season, the strawman called "some people" was at the top of his game. I've forgotten 9-11. I want to hug terrorists. But as often happens in the cutthroat false argument business, his star began to dim. I want to take your guns. Yawn. And it sent him on a downward spiral. He came into the bar already drunk, talkin' 'bout nobody's scared of him no more and no one takes 'im seriously. Bartender. ... an' I was like "bruh, you're bringin' down the whole room." Very bad tipper, too. But then, in his darkest hour, some people makes a surprising comeback. AFTER THESE MESSAGES...

Caption: So, Mr. Mousavi. Leader of Iran's "Green Revolution." The entire free world has invested its hopes for a better Middle East in you. … Why? Because I share the same yearning for individual liberty as you, I suppose. In the words of your own Founding Fathers ... Give me something approximating slightly greater liberty, or give me death!!! Inspiring. We'll be seeking permits for any future protests.
