Caption: Canned Patriotism. Uh-oh. Budweiser is changing its name to America for the summer. US. America. E Pluribus Unum. Actually owned by foreign company. How far we've fallen - from grand experiment to brand experiment. It's like the Bush years all over again. Yeah, I'll have some Freedom Fries and an America. Comin' right up! Menu. If Budweiser is America, does that mean America is Budweiser? I pledge allegiance to the can of the United States of America ... and to the keggers for which it stands ... Of course, it wouldn't be the first inferior product to claim to represent the country ... Make America Great Again.

Caption: It was in the early '70s at a liberal arts college. I was a 21 year-old senior working long hours on a thesis project. At 11am on a Sunday morning, I went to get some lunch at the student union. I was exhausted and badly needed a bath. I set my bag down on a table and went up to order a Dr. Pepper and french fries. I went back to the table with my drink while the fries were cooking, and saw this guy, a transfer student, sitting there. Hey, I took a seat here. How you doin'? Though he had been on campus for only a semester, Carl already had a reputation as an arrogant jerk. My friends and I felt uneasy around him. (This is a long form cartoon. Caption: I sat down, mumbled something in return. Soon my fires were ready and I went up to get them. Back at the table, I ate and drank while Carl chattered away. Suddenly, I panicked. I felt weird in the head. It was like nothing I'd ever felt before. I'd smoked pot less than a handful of times, tried LSD once - this was unlike either high, and out-of-body swirly sensation. I was not able to control my mind. I had trouble forming words. My body felt heavy, and I could not make the decision to get up. Blah blah blah. I thought, "am I having a seizure or a stroke?" (This is a long form cartoon. To see next panels, use "Image Number" box at left and enter 124877.)

Caption: In the minority. France: Unemployment office. Charlie Hebdo. Your God sucks. Move closer to me, honey. Could be a terrorist. Sigh. History of French Colonialism. Go back to where you came from. I believe in free speech and am horrified by the killings. And I believe the cartoons were hurtful and Islamophobic, and will help terrorist recruitment. Victim blamer! Idiot. Shut up in the name of free speech!

Caption: A Cycle of Sadness. Crazy extremists threaten death for blasphemous cartoons against religion X. How dare you insult the prophet? Cartoonists exercise their free speech rights to draw blasphemous cartoons. Terrorists attack, killing cartoonists and several others. Even though mainstream religion X-ers find the cartoons offensive, they condemn the massacre. The terrorists are not us. These killings are against our beliefs! People conflate the two groups anyway. Houses of worship are attacked. Blam! Blam! Some cartoonists and other commentators take things to new extremes. Take that, religion X-ers! Extremist politicians thrive, further alienating minorities. More violent extremists emerge.

Caption: It's the excessive force, stupid. Sending National Guard troops to the border to deal with child refugees. Bombing individual militants with drones in populated areas. Hospital. Made in USA. Militarizing police departments. Don't shoot. Maybe it's time to dial the belligerence back a bit. I'd be kicking butt in Iraq! Rattle! Rattle! Oh, never mind.

Caption: Slowpoke. Slowpoke Euro-Notes. You may encounter the exotic … "Bidets" are a French invention for catching travelers' laundry drippings. Non-QWERTY keyboards in Moroccan-run internet cafes will BLOW YOUR MIND. All I want is the letter "P"! FOOM! Frugal Korner. In Paris, make you own cafe: Le Petit Budget. You. Fabulous view of people spending more than you. 3 Euro bottle of wine. This is the new international symbol for "food that is affordable for Americans." Kebab. ... And the pathetic: Psychologists still cannot explain the impulse that causes some tourists to buy jester hats. I (heart) London. Fun Fact: Michelangelo's "David" is really a giant naked man! Hubba hubba!

Caption: Slowpoke. Name that Plan! THE PUBLIC OPTION - It sounds like a restroom. Confidential to the Obama administration: That's a tough sell. Why not the PATRIOT PLAN? (Duh!) My fellow Americans, right now the FRENCH are healthier than we are, at a lower cost per person. Are we really going to let PIERRE beat us? Hell NO! Patriot Plan. Or the PC-vs-MAC approach? I'm a private insurance company. I'm a young, hip, citizen owned alternative! Or when all else fails, go macho with TOUGHCARE. A strong America needs healthy people! No more of this half-assed WUSS coverage! TOUGHCARE - the plan with BAWLS!
