Background about Ann Telnaes

Ann Telnaes can't remember when she didn't have a pen in her hand. Her interest in and talent for drawing was obvious by age 6.

B
orn in Sweden, Ann attended California Institute of the Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, specializing in character animation. Before beginning her career as an editorial cartoonist, Ann worked for several years at Walt Disney Imagineering as a designer. She has also been an animator for various studios in London, Los Angeles, New York and Taiwan.


Ann began her career in editorial cartooning in the early 1990's. Her training in animation facilitated her shift from print to animated editorial cartoons in 2008. She now creates animated editorial catoons exclusively for the Washington Post while creating print cartoons on a more limited basis.

Ann's print editorial cartoons have appeared in such prestigious publications as The Chicago Tribune,The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Newsday, The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, Austin American Statesman and USA Today. Plus, her cartoons have been exhibited at the Library of Congress, in Paris and in Jerusalem and have been collected in two books, "Humor's Edge" and "Dick."

Ann won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 2001. Other awards include: The MAGGIE Award from Planned Parentgood (2002), The National Headliner Award for Editorial Cartoons (1997), Best Cartoonist by the Population Institute XVIIth Global Media Awards (1996), Best Editorial Cartoonist in the Sixth Annual Environmental Media Awards (1996), and Finalist for the National Cartoonists Society Reuben Awards in the editorial cartoon category (1996). Her television appearances include: The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, C-Span, and The Editors, World Affairs Television.

Ann's print editorial cartoons are distributed to newspapers by Cartoonists and Writers Syndicate. She also draws cartoons for Womens's eNews.
